Richmond Valley Council has taken action on gender equity through three key initiatives as part of 100 Days for Change. Located in the Northern Rivers region of north-eastern New South Wales, Richmond Valley Council has a strong workforce of 250 people.

“Richmond Valley Council is totally committed to bridging over barriers to ensure there is plenty of opportunity and associated training and development for our female employees and young people,” said Caroline Redwood, Manager Organisational Development at Richmond Valley Council.

The three initiatives:

1.  Implementing a Domestic and Family Violence Policy in July 2018

2. Running Women in the Workplace workshops

Held during the week beginning 9 July, the Women in the Workplace workshops were a series of three events open to all women at Richmond Valley Council.  At the workshops, attendees discussed and applied essential elements of the workplace skillset, including emotional intelligence, communication and accountability.

3. Running a Try a Trade program

10 young women attending school recently spent a week working in Richmond Valley Council’s operational sections. Participants gained experience into what it would be like to work outdoors in horticulture, engineering, survey and design, civil construction and water sewer construction. The Try a Trade program was a great success and received rave reviews from participants. A participant said, “It was an amazing experience to have. Good to learn about different trades, jobs and so much more. Thank you to everyone in Richmond Valley Council for this program and being selected to participate in this. I enjoyed it very much. It has encouraged myself to think about a school based traineeship at the Council.”
